I have prepared this educational web site for Healthcare Professionals who may be encountering prostheses and orthoses for the first time, or are only occasionally in contact with them. This is an information resource and is not intended or designed to replace professional medical advice or consultation. My primary intention is to facilitate Multi Disciplinary Team working by improving understanding and thus communication.

The modern prosthetist/orthotist is recognised as being a Health Care Professional and member of the multi disciplinary team. In comparison to other professional groups, prosthetist / orthotists are rather few in number, with probably around fifty currently practicing in Ireland. For this reason they are less likely to be encountered and more likely to remain enigmatic. Improving the understanding of the prosthetist/orthotist’s role and explaining terminology will certainly have a mutually beneficial effect upon professional interaction and consequently improve the quality of treatment/care and outcomes.

This web site covers almost all categories of prostheses and orthoses and the relevant prosthetic and orthotic procedures. It briefly touches on the interaction between prosthetist / orthotists and therapists – the systems and protocols which apply to this interaction vary so widely that no detail is possible. Also, no document can be absolutely comprehensive and some topics are covered only superficially. If more detail is required the staff at IDS are easily contactable and will be only to happy to advise. In addition and in keeping with our MDT ethos we frequently give lectures and presentations to special interest groups and to students, especially of physiotherapy, occupational therapy and surgery. IDS has formally provided the prosthetic and orthotic modules for the RCSI registrar training scheme for several years now and a CD-ROM version this web site has been adopted as an integral part of the scheme.
