The Company was formed in 1989, as a specialist manufacturer and supplier of prostheses and orthoses, initially to serve Cappagh Hospital and the Central Remedial Clinic, both of which are in Dublin.

IDS Ltd has grown steadily since then and in 1999 the company formed a strategic partnership with Otto Bock Clinical Care
U. K., which has been mutually very beneficial. The Otto Bock group is probably the largest P&O organisation in the world and the partnership gives IDS access to their unrivalled resources.

Our team includes nine prosthetist/orthotists, who are all formally qualified University graduates. The prostheses and orthoses are manufactured and maintained by ten technicians. We have two store persons in charge of our components and materials. Four administrators take care of appointments, accounts etc.

There are no University courses in Ireland which provide Prosthetic or Orthotic formal qualifications. Currently two Universities, Strathclyde in Glasgow and Salford near Manchester offer Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in Prosthetics and Orthotics.
IDS also has a strong association with the Royal College Surgeons Ireland (RCSI). We provide the prosthetic and orthotic modules of the orthopaedic surgical registrar training scheme. This CDROM is an accredited and intergral medium for this course.

IDS is approved to provide final year clinical placement training by both Universities and we constantly have students on site. At IDS we recognise the importance of further training and education for all our staff. |
Training courses are held at Cappagh frequently and the staff also travel to courses in the U. K. and beyond. Each member of our clinical staff has one or more area of prosthetic or orthotic practice in which they are particularly interested.
Examples of this are paediatrics, upper limb prosthetics and spinal orthotics. Each topic is normally "covered" by more than one clinician in case of absence from the clinic. |
