IDS ::: Definitions and Abbreviations
Prostheses are synthetic replacement body parts. This guide refers only to prosthetic limbs, i.e. artificial arms and legs.
Orthoses
- Are externally applied devices used to control motion and function of body segments
- Compensate for a disorder and reduce handicap for biomechanical (and psychological) reasons
- Rely on 3 point fixation, moment arms and pressure distribution
Orthotic Abbreviations
AFO's - Ankle Foot Orthoses
FFO's - Functional Foot Orthoses
KAFO's - Knee Ankle Foot Orthoses
HKAFO' s Hip Knee Ankle Foot Orthoses
RGO' s - Reciprocating Gait Orthoses
TSO's - Thoraco Lumbo Sacral Orthoses
WHO's - Wrist Hand Orthoses
These refer to the human joints contained within the orthosis e.g. an H.K.A.F.O. is an orthosis which extends over the patient's hip, knee, ankle and foot.
N.B. these abbreviations are not always used. Some are referred to by a specific name such as a “flail arm splint.”

Flexion contracture
Exoskeletal -means having an external framework. A crab is therefore exoskeletal. This is different from a human for example, as a human skeleton is effectively an internal framework A human is therefore endoskeletal.
Endoskeletal - means having an internal framework or chassis. A human is therefore endoskeletal as the skeleton is an internal framework. This is clearly a different situation from a crab which has an external framework – an exoskeletal construction.
