– IDS receives referrals of amputees from all age groups – there is absolutely no age restriction. However, Cappagh Hospital cannot currently offer inpatient care to clients who have been referred to IDS from other hospitals. Many amputees do not require inpatient care and do not want it; IDS is often able to provide a fast and efficient service on a day-patient basis. Those amputees who do require inpatient care are likely to be able to receive this elsewhere.
– The Limerick clinic, at the Mid-Western Regional Orthopaedic Hospital in Croom, is different from Cappagh in that inpatient care is available and is routine for those who require it. There is therefore absolutely no restriction unless the referring Consultant has identified that the client also requires a specialised service not available in Limerick.
– A very wide range of clients are routinely referred to these clinics. Some clients are very severely disabled and at the other extreme international athletes attend for the orthotic management of sports-related issues. With regard to disabling conditions, the spectrum is very wide from orthopaedic problems to neurological, muscular and vascular diseases. Some clinics tend to have a higher proportion of children attending than others, but at most clinics there is a broad age-mix.
