IDS ::: Orthotics ::: Hip Abduction BracesHip abduction braces are designed to restrict the range of movement of a hip joint which is considered to be at risk of dislocation if it exceeds those limits. They are generally modular, being assembled by an orthotist to suit the side affected and the physique of the patient. The range of available movement is also set by the orthotist. The brace comprises a pelvic section which encloses both hips and can be unfastened at the front to allow donning and doffing. A hip joint and thigh section is attached to the pelvic section on the affected side. The joint allows flexion and extension within the limits set by the orthotist by adjusting the joint. Normally the brace permits abduction but not adduction so they might be more accurately be referred to as an anti-adduction brace.
