IDS ::: Orthotics ::: Specialist FootwearSpecialist footwear can be categorised into one of two main types. These are stock footwear and bespoke footwear. Stock footwear - which has not been custom made for an individual but specially selected for the individual from a range of footwear available from arrange of specialist manufacturers. These items of footwear are available in a range of sizes and last shapes which is much larger than those available from general footwear manufacturers. They can therefore accommodate such features as severe hallux valgus, claw/hammer toes and swelling. They can also incorporate features required for such conditions as diabetes, where a very detailed specification is required. Footwear is also available in washable materials for conditions such as weeping ulcers etc . Stock footwear can generally be ordered with modifications such as wedges, raises, non-standard soleing or alternative fastenings. Generally they can also be ordered to a fitting stage, at which time modifications can be specified in finishing.
Bespoke footwear - on many occasions problematic feet may require footwear which is outside even the range of specialist stock manufacturers. In this situation it does need to be "bespoke" that is, custom made. This process normally begins with measurements and/or plaster casts being taken, but Cad-Cam processes are now using digitising technology.
