Upper limb prosthetic construction
Most upper limb prostheses are exoskeletal (laminated or preformed plastic) as the hollow structure can contain mechanisms while being very light but strong. Some are still made with the old conventional materials of leather and metal. Endoskeletal upper limb systems do exist but many of these are for light or cosmetic use. Where prosthetic hands are fitted they are generally covered with a cosmetic glove. Partial hand prostheses, as with partial feet, are generally made from silicone but technical aids may be used in addition or as an alternative.

Hands & terminal devices
Prosthetic hands and terminal devices are intended to partially replace the function of the missing human hand. The complexity of movement and function available from any design is a tiny fraction of that which has been lost. Independent movement of individual fingers is not currently available, although with some designs fine control of grasp is available.
With some more distal levels of transradial amputations and wrist disarticulation amputation some suspiration and pronation may be retained and may be mimicked by rotation in some prosthetic designs. However compound movements of the wrist cannot be replaced prostheticly.
A terminal device is used to in lieu of a prosthetic hand where function is of greater importance than cosmesis. They may be for general use, such as a spilt hook or Greiffer or designed for a specific purpose such as personal hygiene, eating or hobbies.
