IDS ::: Prosthetics ::: AmputationsAmputation – is it a constructive procedure? The decision to amputate may mean that another orthopaedic or vascular procedure has failed or is inappropriate. However, it is still a crucially important intervention, especially for an amputee who may have decades of prosthetic use ahead. A person who has been suffering the effects of a chronic limb problem may well find that amputation is a very beneficial intervention. In the case of an elective amputation, the potential amputee needs to give informed consent. This information should be given by an appropriately qualified person. Frequently the clinical staff at IDS are asked to provide such information and advice and often discussions are held between the patient the surgeon and the prosthetist.
