IDS ::: Prosthetics ::: Procedures - Assessment
Assessment.
There are three main aspects to this, static, dynamic and psycho / social. The physical assessment covers areas such as
- Static: During this process the prosthetist will be assessing physical features such as the amputation level, the condition of the residual limb, the range of motion and power, the conditional of the contralateral limb and joint stability. This list is by no means comprehensive.
- Dynamic: At this stage the prosthetist will, when appropriate, examine the the amputee in motion, assessing such features as strength, fitness, balance and dynamic joint stability.
- The psycho / social assessment will cover cognitive aspects, compliance, mood, environment and social support.

Psycho / Social Assessment
|
Only after a full assessment has been carried out can the prosthesis be specified and the manufacturing process begin.
- Is the patient prepared to wear the suggested prosthesis?
- Will he or she be able to understand its function, don it on and off, use it safely at home?
- Failing to consider these areas can be wasteful or even dangerous!
