Casting and Measurement
Casting and measurement.
To facilitate the manufacture of the socket, a plaster cast or accurate measurements of the residual limb must be taken. Casts are taken by wrapping plaster of paris bandages around the residual limb. The prosthetist shapes the cast to obtain the optimum shape before the plaster hardens. Some casts are taken inside a pressurised bag. As an alternative to casting, digitising systems are sometimes used the socket being manufactured by CAD-CAM.
Regardless of which technique is used, other measurements are required, such as the length of the contralateral limb.
