The Socket

The residual limb fits into the socket which is the structural connection between the residual limb and the prosthesis. For a lower limb prosthesis, all loads and forces generated in stance and gait are transmitted through the socket. The same applies to the loads generated when using an upper limb prosthesis. It is crucially important that the socket fits correctly.

• The socket may be designed to be worn with or without special socks known as stump socks.
• The socket may be designed to be used with some type of liner.
• The socket can be constructed from a variety of materials.
• The prosthesis will have some form of suspension to maintain the connection with the residual limb.
