Orthoses

knee orthosis

Orthoses can be used to assist a very wide range of clients from the highly enabled athlete to the most severely disabled persons. The age range of IDS clients spans from a few months to over 90 years of age. All Clients are individuals with unique aspirations, expectations and requirements. Orthoses provided by IDS are intended to optimise these characteristics. Therefore, it is essential for a full initial assessment to be carried out by fully qualified Orthotists

Orthoses provided by IDS may be either stock devices – that is manufactured to suit a range of clients or custom made devices i.e. - manufactured to suit the requirements of one individual. There are many manufacturers of prosthetic components and materials. IDS ltd is part of the Otto Bock Group of Companies. Otto Bock components and materials are invariably of very high quality. They are very reliable and often offer benefits that are not offered by other manufacturers. Our direct link with Otto Bock means that we have contact which results in excellent service, training, development and support so we routinely consider Otto Bock products and components as a first option. However, if an alternative provider offers something which would be more advantageous to the client then this would also be considered because patient care is the top priority. We therefore purchase devices, components and materials from all around the world.

The IDS clinicians are trained to select the most appropriate stock devices in terms of function, ease of use, appearance and reliability. They select the components and materials for custom made devices with the same principles in mind. In some situations the requirement and related specification may be straightforward but in others it may be complex. Often the best solution may be a compromise of the opposing benefits of these features. For example – one specification may provide the best function but be heavier or more difficult to don than another specification. In such cases the decision process will be discussed with the client. In all cases the approval of the client is sought before proceeding further.
